April Ross

April Ross was one of only a few women beach volleyball athletes who earned medals in several Olympics. In Tokyo during the next few days, she'll be aiming to claim her third Olympic medal with fellow the first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. Ross also hopes to get her first Olympic medal. And at the age of 39, it could be her last opportunity to do so. But she's confident top awards are within reach. Ross was mentioned by NBC Boston as saying that if you play your best, even if you do well, we'll get the gold. So I'm going to take some luck as well. Ross was born on the 22nd, 1982 at Costa Mesa California. She resided in the area together with her parents. In Newport Harbor High School, she played in a variety of sports. In her time as a college athlete, she also played indoor volleyball and track. She was definitely superior to the rest in the latter sport. During her high school career she played middle blocker outside hitter and setter on the volleyball court per her college bio. She was named one of the Gatorade National Circle of Champions player of the year in 1999, for her performance. She also captured the award in 2000. Orange County Athlete of the Year trophy for volleyball. Ross has been playing alongside Klineman since the year 2017 but her beach game was established well before this. She's won big competitions with different players. The other is an iconic player in the world of volleyball. Jennifer Kessy was her partner for six years, from 2007 until 2013. She also coached Klineman and herself. Kessy was Ross's co-coach at the 2009 World Championships. They won a Silver Medal at the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. Misty May, Kerri Walsh and Kerri Jennings were the trio to beat for the gold. Ross was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. They went on to compete for the bronze beach volleyball trophy at the Rio Olympics in 2016 along with Walsh Jennings. In high school and the several years prior to hitting the sand professionally, Ross balled out to the Trojans at USC while a collegiate. Ross's time in the Trojans was amazing. In 2000, she was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and NCAA Freshman of the Year and an All-American. She was also a key player to help the Trojans to make it to the Final Four. She was devastated by a tragic incident in her second year, but she was able to make it an All-American again. Over the course of her final two seasons with the Trojans she was instrumental in helping them to win two consecutive titles. In her own way she established herself as a legend by winning the Honda Sports Award for 2003-04. The award is given to the best female college volleyball players across the United States. Ross had been an international studies student at USC. Margie Ross did not get to see Ross reach beach volleyball's highest level. Ross's mother died of breast cancer while she was a sophomore at USC. In the aftermath, Ross continues to be close to her parent who died.
